How to delete the recent history in Microsoft Windows XP

Recent history in Microsoft XP helps us to navigate the files and/or folders in a easy and quick way. It is nothing but the list containing the shortcuts of your recently opened files and folders. But it sometimes creates problems when we access any of our important or hidden documents and the shortcut of that document be placed in the "My Recent Document" link in the Start Menu.

Here is a demonstration to delete the recent history in Microsoft XP with screenshots to help you to do the right thing. There are two ways to clear the recent document list. The procedures are as follows.

Procedure 1:

Step 1: Right click on "start" menu. Then click on "Properties".

Step 2: Now click on the button "Customize".

Step 3: Go to "Advanced" tab. Then click on "Clear List" button.

Step 4: When you are done, you can see "Clear List" button inactive, like the following screenshot.

[N.B.: You can also right click on any other empty places on taskbar. If you do so, then click on "Properties", then go to "Start Menu" tab. Then follow from Step 2 onwards to clear your recent document.]

Procedure 2:

Step 1: Holding windows button press R, i.e., press Windows+R (or click on "start", then "Run").

Step 2: Type "recent" (without the quotes) as the command.

Step 3: Click "OK" or press "Enter" button on keyboard.

Step 4: The system folder "My Recent Documents" will appear.

Now you can delete the shortcuts of your recently opened documents whichever you want. You can also delete all the shortcuts.

Step 5: Close the window.

Warning and precautions: If you have unhide the operating system files and/or the hidden files, then be aware about the operating system files before deleting all the documents. If you cannot delete any shortcut, then leave it and try to do with the others. Procedure 1 does not have any threat and thats why I think the it is the most secure way for any user.

How to import bookmarks or other data from other web browsers to Google Chrome

I have started to use Google Chrome just a few months ago. I used it for a some days and then set it as my default web browser. But there was a lot of problems for me. A new software, a new interface, new kind of settings... A problem to set default home page in Google Chrome has described to you earlier. Anther problem was my saved passwords. Later I solved this by importing the required data from the other web browser(s).

There are some easy steps to import data from other web browsers. Just follow one by one and get it ready in Google Chrome.

Step 1: Run your Google Chrome.

Step 2: Click on the wrench icon in the top-right corner of Chrome window.

Step 3: Click on "Options".

Step 4: A small window will appear having title "Google Chrome Options". Go to "Personal Stuff" tab.

Step 5: Click on the button "Import data from another browser..." in "Browsing data" section.

Step 6: Click on the arrow head (as shown in the following figure) beside "From" and then select any one name of the web browsers from which you wish to import your data.

Step 7: Put check mark on or off in the boxes to select items to import.

Step 8: Click on "Import" button.

That's all to import data from other web browser(s) to Google Chrome. Though in the screenshots I imported data from Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can select any of your web browsers (all the browsers installed in your system will be listed) at a time. Any time you can import data from another browser to Chrome.

How to erase your temporary files in Windows XP

We all suffers from a common problem of being low free space of Hard Disc Drive. The problem appears seriously if your operating system is installed on that drive because the drive, on which your operating system is installed, requires more free spaces for allocating "Page Files" onto Hard Disc.

The reasons behind the shortage of spaces are of different types such as saving your documents in "My Documents" or storing songs in "My Musics" etc. Another reason may be some different type and I am going to describe this kind of problem.

Whenever we install any kind of software or update any software including Operating System, some Files and/or Folders are created and stored in "temp" folder in system folder. These Files/Folders become unnecessary after the installation or update(s). We can delete it. Moreover we can delete the unnecessary and burdened Files and/or Folders in Windows XP without the help of any software. But before this we need to know where and how we will get the "temp" folder.

The process is little bit easy. I have attached some screenshots to guide you. The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Click on "start" button.

Step 2: Then click on "Run".
You can also make the Steps 1 and 2 by pressing "Windows button+R" simultaneously.

Step 3: A small window, named "Run" will appear.

Step 4: Type "temp" [without quotes] in the space provided.

Step 5: Now click on "Ok" button otherwise you can also press the "Enter" button.

Step 6: Now a window, named "Temp" will appear. This is the required folder.

Step 7: Select the Files and/or Folders which you need to delete and then delete.

While using different web browsers, I have faced a problem about the home page earlier. I had no idea about it and also the settings. Later I used many of the web browsers and here I am going to discuss about the settings in Google Chrome web browser. It may be so much easy to set home page in google chrome to Advanced Users but I think this article may be helpful to all the people.

To set home page in Google Chrome first run the application. Then find the wrench icon in the upper - right side in the window of the application. The following figure will help you to find it.
Now click on it and choose "Options" from the drop-down list.

Now a small pop-up window will appear and looks like the following figure.
Here first of all make sure that you are in "Basics" tab.Next in the "Home page" section select the radio button before the option "Open this page" and write the address of the website which you want as your home page in Google Chrome. Remember, you have to write the complete url of the web site. As an example, I set it as Google and I put the url as http://www.google.com (You can also make a blank page for your home page. It is also so simple. Select the radio button before the option "Use the New Tab page").

How to set a schedule download with Internet Download Manager (IDM)

Internet Download Manager (IDM) is a strong tool for downloading documents, videos, audio files and everything not only in the sense of increasing the speed of download but also for it's feature to set schedule for your download. It's possible to schedule exploring/downloading time or synchronization time for every project.

If you choose "One-time exploring/downloading" option then it will be possible (a) only to explore a site to look for matching files, or (b) to explore a site and download all matched files, or (c) to download checked files.

Please note that if you need to download several files from a site that has frequent problems with downloading, it's better to add required files to IDM main list and download these files using "Start Queue" button in IDM main window. In this case IDM will retry to start downloading files infinitely. But when you are downloading in the grabber, the grabber makes only 2 attempts to start downloading, after it stops supposing it did everything possible for the project.

You can schedule periodic synchronization for a site or for checked files by turning on "Periodic synchronization" option. In this case the grabber checks if files have been changed, and if changed, it will download new files and replace them on new ones. For periodic synchronization, the scheduler will turn on "overwrite existing files" option in project settings on step 2 of the grabber wizard.

The project will start at a specified day and time only if "Start download at" box is checked. The project itself should be closed, or if it's opened, it should be opened in the Main Action Dialog and it should be stopped. A running project, or a project opened on any stage of the wizard will not be run by the scheduler.

If you choose "Periodic synchronization" it will be possible to start the project many times in every predefined number of minutes/hours. The scheduler will run the project periodically until the time specified in "Stop download at", or if it's not specified then until the end of the day.

It's possible to stop any project at a specified time if you check "Stop download at" box and specify a time. Note that the project will stop independently of "Start download at" checkbox state.

After processing a grabber project you can program the grabber to hang up modem, exit Internet Download Manager, or turn off computer like in the main IDM scheduler. But in the grabber scheduler you can also open a file or run a program after processing a grabber project. If you want to run several files on completion of a grabber task, you can create a batch .bat file and specify it in "Open the following file when done". Please note that after finishing a scheduled project, IDM will wait for 10 seconds and then start to execute actions planned on completion.

Internet Download Manager (IDM) is a very powerful tool to increase the rate of your download and also very helpful to make your download resumable (if domain support).

There are several ways to start your downloads with Internet Download Manager:

IDM monitors clicks in Internet Explorer, MSN Explorer, AOL, Opera, Mozilla, Netscape, and many other browsers.
This method is the easiest one. If you click on a download link in Internet Explorer or in another browser IDM will take over and accelerate this download. In this case you don't need to do anything special, just browse the Internet as you usually do. IDM takes over a download from Internet Explorer if its type matches the list of types/extensions. The list of file types/extensions to download with IDM can be edited in Options->General.

If you click on Download Later button, URL (web address) will be added to the list of downloads, but the download process doesn't start. If you click on Start Download button, IDM will start downloading the file immediately. IDM lets you associate your downloads with IDM categories. IDM suggests the category and the default download directory according to file type. You may edit categories, delete and add new categories in the main IDM window. If you want to see the contents of a zip file before downloading, you may click on Preview button.
IDM will take over any download if you hold down the CTRL key while clicking its download link in Internet Explorer. (you should check "Use CTRL key with IE click monitoring" box in "IDM Options->General").

If you hold down the ALT key while clicking on a download link in IE, IDM will not take over the download and let Internet Explorer download the file. (you should check "Use ALT key with IE click monitoring" box in "IDM Options->General")

If you don't want IDM to take over any downloads from a browser, turn off the browser integration in IDM options. After turning off or on the browser integration in "IDM Options->General", don't forget to restart the browser.

Remember if Internet Download Manager had problems downloading file, you should press Alt while clicking on a link to let the browser process the download.

IDM monitors clipboard for valid URLs (web addresses).
IDM monitors system clipboard for URLs with special extension types. When a web address is being copied to the clipboard, IDM shows its dialog to start Download.

If you click on OK button, IDM will start downloading.

IDM integrates into right click link menu of IE based (MSN, AOL, Avant) and Mozilla based (Firefox, Netscape) browsers
If you right click on a link in a browser, you will see "Download with IDM" menu item. You can download a specific link or all links in the selected text from an html page.

This way of downloading files is useful if IDM couldn't take over the download automatically. Just pick this item to start downloading a link with IDM. You may also select a text in Internet Explorer, and pick "Download with IDM" to add all links in the selected text to IDM.

You can add URL (web address) manually with Add URL button.

Drag and Drop links from Internet Explorer to IDM main window or download basket
Drop target is a window that accepts hyperlinks dragged from Internet Explorer, Netscape or Opera browsers. You can drag a link from your browser and drop it to this window in order to start your downloads with IDM.

If you want to hide this window simply close it. Later you can pick "Url-> Show drop target" from the main menu (or tray menu) if you want this window to appear again.

/q - IDM will exit after the successful downloading. This parameter works only for the first copy
/h - IDM will hang up your connection after the successful downloading
/n - turns on the silent mode when IDM doesn't ask any questions
/a - add a file, specified with /d, to download queue, but don't start downloading

Parameters /a, /h, /n, /q, /f local_file_name, /p local_path work only if you specified the file to download with /d URL

► Suppose today is October 1, 2003, and the program you want to watch starts at 20:45 tonight. Follow these steps:
1. Run ASD, select Execute at in Time Setting and enter 20:45 10-01-2003;
2. Select Open file in Task Setting;
3. Click the Select button on the right to select the TV device driver (or shortcut of this program);
4. Click the Run button on the right to test;

█ I find ASD is very convenient to use. However, sometimes my colleagues change my settings. What should I do to preserve the settings?

► In this case, you need to set a password. Follow these steps:
1.Run ASD, and right-click its tray icon (at bottom-right of the screen);
2.Select Set Password from the main menu;
3.Enter and confirm a password then click OK;
From now on your password will be required for any change in settings of ASD. When you no longer need the password, you can remove it by clicking Cancel Password in the main menu.

► In general, it could be one of these cases:
1.The hidden device APM/NT Legacy Mode hasn't been selected.
It is very likely that a computer can't be powered off automatically because the hidden device APM/NT Legacy Mode hasn't been selected. So check its status first: right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, select Properties, then Hardware, then Device Manager, click View and select show hidden devices. If your computer has this option, you will see a red X before APM/NT Legacy Mode. Select this function and you will solve the problem.

Quick Start Guide of Accurate Shutdown

For the quick start of Accurate Shutdown follow the tray icon of the program located at the bottom-right of the screen.

The tray icon is still appeared when ASD is idle. If you left-click the icon, the setting interface of ASD will appear on the screen (It doesn't work when ASD is working).

While ASD is working, its tray icon flashs.

Right-click the tray icon, the main menu of ASD will appear.

It consists of:

Start: Click it to initiate the tasks and its tray icon will start blinking. If you right click the blinking icon, it will be replaced by Stop, and if Stop is clicked , the program will stop working right away.

Setting: If clicked , the settings interface will appear.

Hide Icon: This function can hide tray icon. Press "Ctrl + F11" to display that again.

Resume on Time: This will lead you to a tutorial which shows you how to set your computer to be turned on automatically at specified time.

Lock PC: The function can Lock your computer and avoid any unauthorized operation.

Set Password: Sets a password to prevent any unauthorized operation. Once you set a password, you will be required to enter it for any important operation. Furthermore, from now on Set Password is replaced by Cancel Password until you successfully carry out the Cancel Password operation. If you click on Cancel Password, your present password will be required.

Adjust time: Synchronizes your PC's time to atomic clock servers.

Quick Launch: Executes the "Turn Off PC/ Restart PC, Log Off/ Standby/ Hibernate/ Turn Off Monitor/ Disconnect Internet" quickly.

Help: Displays the help file for the software.

About: Displays the initial interface of the program. Clicks on the interface then it disappears.

Speed Your Torrent Download

We are all now more or less familiar with Torrent. We download a lot of things via different torrent clients, like utorrent, bit torrent, flashget etc. But at the same time we often murmured about the speed. All of us always think about that if the speed would be more then that will be better.

I tried a lot and found something interested about it.
There are several ways to fix the problem of slow download speed. The ways I have tested in all torrent clients, but here the pictures are of bit torrent client.

Procedure 1:
Check the speed of your ISP (Internet Service Provider):
First of all, check the speed of your broadband connection. Your download speed (whether it may be torrent download or not) can not cross the maximum download speed of your ISP. Most of the providers have specific bandwidths for both upload and download. You can check your bandwidth speed within the torrent client.

Procedure 2:
Pick up the right torrent file:
While downloading the torrent file, be cautious about the health of the file. Also check the number of seeder, leecher and peers. The best thing is to choose a torrent file which has the best seeder, leecher ratio,i.e., which file has the highest number of seeders and the lowest number of leechers.

Procedure 3:
Use the Right Torrent Client:
There are several torrent clients. Use the better option, like uTorrent, Bit Torrent, Flashget etc. You can see a list of torrent clients in wikipedia.

Procedure 4:
Limit the Upload Rate:
It may be happen that your ISP has different slots for both download and upload, but always upload rate effects the download rate. Set your upload rate to the minimum level. Actually there is no certain rate for every torrent, but in most of the cases I set it to 3kb/s. and got better download rate.

To set the upload limit open your torrent client, then click on the "Preference" button.

A pop-up window will come, click on "bandwidth" option in the left side bar panel . Uncheck the option "Automatic" and then set Maximum Upload Rate under "Global Upload Rate Limiting" option. See the picture:

Procedure 5:
Set Your Firewall Policy:
Open your torrent client, go to "Preference". Then click on "Connection" option in the left side bar panel. Now in the right side of the box, tick in the check box "Add Windows Firewall Exception" (See picture).

Procedure 6:
Protocol Encryption:
Open your torrent client, go to "Preference". Then select "BitTorrent" option in the right side column.
Now under "Protocol Encryption" setting, put a check mark on "Allow incoming legacy connections".

Now under "Protocol Encryption" setting, tests with the "outgoing" option with enabled, disabled and forced options. You can get better speeds with encryption disabled. Again Non-encryption makes a torrent connection compatible with someone who is not using encryption but it makes the torrent detectable to an ISP with a bandwidth restricting policy and decrease the speed.

Procedure 7:
Updation of the Torrent client:
Always use the updated Torrent client. After installing your Torrent client, you can off the setting for the automatic update because it might slow down the rate of your download. But at the same time my suggestion is that never forget to update it frequently whenever you will not downloading.
To do this, click on "Preference", select "General" in the right side bar. Now under "Privacy" setting you can find the automatic update setting. The following picture will help you.

Procedure 8:
Bandwidth Settings:
Set your bandwidth settings with the help of the following picture:

These settings are variable. As -
(i) setting "Global maximum number of connections" to too high does not imply the higher speed as well as the too low settings would miss the peers for your download, I have set it to 200.
(ii) setting of "Maximum number of connected peers per torrent" depends on ISP's bandwidth. I have set it 50 for my 256 kbps connection.
(iii) setting of "Number of upload slots per torrent" option to too low might affect your download. Also the higher slot does not imply the faster download. I have kept the default value as 4.

Procedure 9:
Port Number:
The default port for the BitTorrent protocol is any between port numbers 6881-6999. ISPs throttle traffic on these ports as BitTorrent sharing involves high bandwidth usage. It’s easy to configure a different port in your torrent client. Use some number above 10000 to get around ISPs and also avoid problems with other applications.

Procedure 10:
Other some points to be noted:
(i) The Torrent clients allows us to choose the files separately when we go for download. You can select the particular file or files, you need. Thus the unnecessary downloads will not be done.
(ii) Always be sure that when you change any setting(s) in your Torrent client, if there would be any problem, you can reverse back the original settings.
(iii) Be familiar with the customization of your Torrent client. You can take help of the help file of your Torrent client and also the website of the corresponding software.

How to Hibernate your Windows XP?

First of all install the Graphics Driver in your computer, whether it may be a separate graphics card or the default chipset graphics device.

After installing the above mentioned driver restart your computer.

Now go to "Control Panel". Then double click on the "Power Options".

The "Power Option Properties" window will come. Now go to the tab "Hibernate".

Check in the box "Enable hibernation". Click on "Apply" and then "OK".

Now whenever you want to hibernate your system, just go to the option "Turn Off Computer" and click on it. Now press shift button (any shift button, right or left) in your keyboard and see the option "Stand By" becomes "Hibernate" (See the Picture).

Now holding the shift button down click on the option "Hibernate".

Some Common Tips to Use Internet Download Manager (IDM)

IDM takes over a download from any browser if its type matches the list of types/extensions. You may edit the list of extensions in "IDM Options -> File types".

IDM will take over any download if you hold down a special key while clicking its download link in a browser. (you need to set this key in IDM options -> General Tab -> Keys button. Note that "Insert" key should work with most browsers).

If you hold down the ALT key while clicking on a download link in a browser, IDM will not take over the download and let the browser download the file. (you may change this key in IDM options, General Tab, Keys button).

If you don't understand anything, just try to press F1 key and the context sensitive help will appear.

If you don't want IDM to take over any downloads from a browser, turn off the browser integration in IDM options.

You may drag links from a web browser and drop them to "drop target" basket. "drop target" basket pops up when you right click on IDM tray icon and pick "Show drop target" or when you pick "Url->Show drop target" from IDM main window.

You may disable the download complete dialog that suggests opening the file. Just uncheck "Show download complete dialog" box in "IDM Options->Downloads".

You may disable the start download dialog that asks where to save the file. Just uncheck "Show start download dialog" box in "IDM Options->Downloads".

You may minimize or disable progress download dialogs in IDM Options->Downloads.
You may run IDM from command line to download files. Read "Help->Starting Downloads" chapter for more information.

You may drag files from IDM main window and drop them to other applications (for example, Winamp, Media Player, etc.). You may also use drag and drop to move or copy files from IDM to any Windows folders.

If you don't want to enter the same name and password over and over again every time you download from a protected server, you may add the server, the login name and the password to sites logins list in "IDM Options->Sites Logins".

If you have problems downloading a file from a server (like busy server, multiple timeouts, other server or network related problems), you may leave this file alone in the queue of IDM scheduler and start the queue. IDM scheduler will retry downloading the file every 30 seconds.

You cannot defragment volumes that the file system has marked as dirty, which indicates possible corruption. You must run chkdsk on a dirty volume before you can defragment it. How to use WINRAR:

      The interface item "Toolbar" is placed below menus, but above the file list. Toolbar buttons duplicate items of the Commands menu (all items of this menu also have keyboard shortcuts). When WinRAR displays an archive contents, some buttons may be disabled, if corresponding archive management functions are not applicable to the archive. If you wish, you may choose buttons to display, remove buttons text or reduce buttons size using General settings dialog or clicking by the right mouse button on the toolbar.

      Below the toolbar buttons you will see the small "Up" button and the disks list. "Up" button changes the current folder to the parent. Disks list is needed to select the current disk or, for example, the network. You may open it either using mouse or pressing F4 key. It is possible to drag "Up" button and the disks list to the right corner of toolbar. Pressing Ctrl+D or clicking the small "Disk" icon on status bar can also be used to change the current disk.

      The list of files is located below the toolbar. It may show either the unpacked contents of the current folder or, if WinRAR is entered to an archive, archived files. These are so called file management and archive management modes. For each file the following parameters are shown: name, size, type and modification time. Archived files also have two additional parameters - packed size and CRC32. CRC32 is the special control sum calculated basing on file data and it may help to detect either two archived files are the same without unpacking them. Same files always have the same CRC32 value. All parameters are organized into columns. By clicking on the column title you may change the files sort order (a blue arrow drawn in the title shows sort direction). Also it is possible to change the width of columns by dragging the column title separators with a mouse. Several additional list options are available in the File list dialog.

      If an archived file is encrypted, its name is followed by an asterisk. If a file is continued in a next volume, its name is followed by "-->". If a file is continued from a previous volume, its name is followed by "<--". And if a file is continued both in a next and from a previous volume, its name is followed by "<->".

      Before processing files you need to select them in the list. In additionally to the standard Windows methods of selecting files WinRAR provides several more keys for this purpose: Space, Ins, "Gray +", "Gray -". More details will be found in the topic Selecting files.

      The following keys may be used to navigate in the file list. Backspace (BS) or Ctrl+PgUp or double-click on the folder with ".." name to go to the parent disk or archive folder. The same action will close an archive, if you are viewing the archive root folder. Press Enter or Ctrl+PgDn or double-click on any other folder to enter to it. The same action applied to an archive name will open this archive. Ctrl+\ sets the root disk folder as the current.

      If you press the right mouse button in the files list, the menu containing file management and interface commands will appear. These commands are also accessible in the usual WinRAR menus, toolbar and keyboard, so you may select whichever activation method is most convenient for you.

      Left pane of WinRAR window can contain the folder tree panel if it is enabled in "Folder tree" submenu of Options. Folder tree is convenient if you need to navigate in disk or archive folders quickly. You may change the width of folder tree by dragging its right border with the mouse.

      Depending upon the "Show archive comment" option in General settings dialog and the presence of a comment in the opened archive, the right part of the file list may be overlapped by the archive comment window. You may change the width of the comment window by dragging its left border with the mouse.

A: Apache HTTP server erroneously reports the RAR archive type as text/plain and as a result, Netscape Navigator/Communicator treats the file as plain text. A:    First of all, you should use RAR recovery record when storing archives onto unreliable media such as floppies. Generally, it is not recommended to create solid archives in this case, use the normal (non solid) mode instead.
       If you have a damaged volume of solid archive, try to repair the damaged volume. It helps if RAR recovery was used when creating archive. You may check for the presence of a recovery record in the archive using Show information command. Rename recovered volume, fixed.arcname.rar (if recovery were not used, WinRAR builds only rebuilt.arcname.rar) to the actual volume name and try to unpack your archive again, starting from the first volume.
Q: I forgot my password, please help me!

A: WinRAR encryption does not have any backdoor. Even if we forget a password to any our archive, we will not be able to restore it. So please do not ask us to help in this situation.
Q:    Why WinRAR does not delete its temporary files in the Windows temporary folder?

A:    It happens when you use drag and drop to extract files or open archived files with an external viewer. In such case files may still be in use when closing WinRAR and moreover, there is no reliable way to detect if the external program still needs these unpacked files. So WinRAR does not delete them immediately, instead, when you run WinRAR the next time, all temporary files older than one hour will be deleted.

      If you do not want to involve the temporary folder when extracting files at all, use either "Extract To" command in WinRAR shell or "Extract To" item in the archive context menu instead of drag and drop.
Q: Why WinRAR does not use 4096 K dictionary for my archive?

A: Even if you specified 4096 K dictionary size in the compression settings, WinRAR may automatically decrease this value when creating a new archive if the total archived data size is at least twice less than dictionary size. It does not hurt compression and allows to reduce memory requirements.

RAR archive format supports a special type of redundant information called a recovery record. If an archive has a recovery record, it can be repaired even in case of physical data damage due to floppy disk failure or data losses of any other kind. The ZIP archive format does not support a recovery record.
To add a recovery record from the command line you may use switch -rr[N] together with any command, which creates or modifies an archive, or command "rr[N]" to add the recovery record to an existing archive. For example:

WinRAR a -rr newarc *.txt
WinRAR d -rr4 newarc dummy.txt
WinRAR rr oldarc
In WinRAR shell mode you may set "Put recovery record" option in Archive name and parameters dialog to add the recovery record to an archive. Another way is to set "Put recovery record" option in the default compression profile. In this case a recovery record will be added to archives after any archive modification.
The recovery record contains up to 524288 recovery sectors. If data is damaged continuously, then each recovery sector is able to recover 512 bytes of damaged information. This value may be lower in cases of multiple damage.
The number of sectors may be specified directly in the "rr[N]" command or "-rr[N]" switch (N = 1, 2 .. 524288). If it is not specified by the user, it will be selected automatically according to the archive size: a size of the recovery information will be about 1% of the total archive size, usually allowing the recovery of up to 0.6% of the total archive size of continuously damaged data.
It is also possible to specify the recovery record size in percent to the archive size. In the command line mode just append the percent character to the command parameter. For example:

winrar rr3% arcname
In the shell mode you may set it either using Protect archive command or setting the recovery record size in the Advanced options of Archive name and parameters dialog.
The recovery record increases the size of an archive. The size of the recovery record may be approximately determined by the formula:
/256 + *512 bytes.
To repair a corrupt archive, which has a recovery record, in WinRAR shell mode apply "Repair" command to it. In the command line use command "r". The repaired archive will have name fixed.arcname.rar, where 'arcname' is the original (damaged) archive name. If a corrupt archive does not contain a recovery record or if an archive is not completely recovered due to major damage, a second stage is performed. During this stage only the archive structure is reconstructed and it is impossible to recover files, which fail the CRC validation, but it is still possible to recover undamaged files, which were inaccessible due to the corrupt archive structure. This is useful only for non-solid archives. When the second stage is completed, the reconstructed archive will be saved as rebuilt.arcname.rar, where 'arcname' is the original archive name.

   There are 5 types of region to capture: rectangle, square, ellipse, circle and polygon. Click the menu item under Capture menu to capture the type of region you want. For example, click "Capture > Rectangle" menu item to capture a rectangle area from the screen. You can also set the Default / Last capture to Window, Button, Control under the Capture tab of Capture settings dialog, then press the hotkey or click "Capture > Default / Last capture" menu item to start capture.

Auto-scroll window during window capture

   If you check the Auto-scroll window option under Capture tab of Capture settings dialog, the program will automatically scroll the captured application's window. It scrolls long pages with a vertical scroll bar, allowing you to capture more than you can see on the screen. In general, leave this function disabled unless you absolutely need this functionality.

   Important: Auto-scroll doesn't work for all applications that have a vertical scroll bar. Some applications erase the marks that Quick Screenshot Maker draws over the window it captures while scrolling. These marks allow it to find out how many pixel lines was scrolled during the scrolling interval. If these control marks are erased, Quick Screenshot Maker has no way of knowing how much data to capture.

   In such a case, it will display an error message and capture what it could without scrolling. The most popular web browsers (MS Internet Explorer) work well with auto-scroll, and many other programs tested well with it. However it may not work with programs who handle the screen in a method hostile to the control mark method.

   Here are the steps for making an Auto-scroll window capture:

   Timer-activated capture allows you to create sequences of screenshots from specific region of the screen, at regular intervals. The captured images will be auto saved in the specific directory with automatic generated file names.

   You can click the "Capture > Time-activated capture" menu item to open the timer settings dialog. Firstly, you should set the frequency of the timer. It can be from 1 seconds to 60 minutes. Secondly, choose the screen area you want to capture. It can be Full screen, active window, or a selected region of the screen. When you select to capture a selected region, you should specify the Start X, Start Y, Width and Height of the region. You can also by clicking the Select region button to specify the region with your mouse on the screen. If you can check the Draw time on the captured image option, each image captured by timer will be drawn on a text indicating the capturing time of it. Thirdly, you should specify the auto-save directory of captures and the image format. The captured images will be saved in the directory with the specific format.    About the file names: The file name of each capture is automatically generated and in "index-year-month-day-hour-minute-second" format. BanglaWord is a smart word processing application, specifically designed for writing Bengali documents. Bangla text is
entered using only the vowels (swarabarnas) and the consonant (banjonbarnos). The conjunct characters (juktho okkors) are
placed automatically by the system if possible otherwise when indicated by the user. Bengali alphabet is mapped phonetically
on to the standard QWERTY keyboard, independent of the any Bangla font. This minimizes the initial learning curve and
removes the need for physical layout template.

Right Click Context Menu

The menu when we click the right mouse button (on any file, folder or drive) appears is often known as "Right-Click Context Menu".
Sometimes it becomes so lengthy that consume more time. Or sometime some unnecessary entries are there. So here we will go through a lesson how to edit the menu.

Here we are now going to add two new item "Copy to" and "Move to" in the right click context menu.

Start --> Run --> regedit.
Create the following registry keys ( i just renamed the winzip key which i dont need in the right click menue and changed it to "copy to" and then added the value). If you want to add the extra item, then click on "ComtextMenuHandlers" and go to
Edit --> New --> Key. Now Name the key properly.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Copy To
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Move To

For the Copy To's set the default value to {C2FBB630-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13} and for the Move To's set the default value to {C2FBB631-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}

Now when you right click on a file or folder, above the send to option are two new options: Copy to Folder and Move to Folder.
You can copy or move files or directories to other folders with this.

We can change any item in the menu as we wish. Here are just two samples, nothing else.

To find and replace specific characters or words

On the Edit menu, click Replace.

You can also incorporate text with the combinations. For example, Page
&p will print out as Page 1, Page 2, and so on.

Notepad is a basic text editor that you can use to create simple documents. The most common use for Notepad is to view or edit text (.txt) files, but many users find Notepad a simple tool for creating Web pages.

Because Notepad supports only very basic formatting, you cannot accidentally save special formatting in documents that need to remain pure text. This is especially useful when creating HTML documents for a Web page because special characters or other formatting may not appear in your published Web page or may even cause errors.

You can save your Notepad files as Unicode, ANSI, UTF-8, or big-endian Unicode. These formats provide you greater flexibility when working with documents that use different character sets.

Using different language formats in Notepad::

Notepad allows you to create and open documents in several different formats: ANSI, Unicode, big-endian Unicode, or UTF-8. These formats allow you to work with documents that use different character sets.

By default, your documents will be saved as standard ANSI text.

Unicode is a superset of all the major scripts of the world. It includes character sets common to business and computer use. When you save a document in Unicode, you can use Unicode control characters to help with text flow and direction for languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.

Some fonts cannot display all of the Unicode characters. If you see any characters missing in your text file, you can change the font to one that includes the character. Generally, Microsoft Sans Serif is a good choice for Unicode characters.

The bytes (a unit of storage) in a word in a Unicode document created on a big-endian processor, such as the Macintosh, are arranged in an order opposite to that of the bytes in a word in a document created on an Intel processor. The most significant byte has the lowest address, with the word stored big end first. To make your documents accessible to users on these types of computers, save your Notepad file in the big-endian Unicode format.

UTF stands for Universal Character Set Transformation Format. UTF-8 is the 8-bit form of Unicode. Save your document in UTF-8 if you are using older transmission media that support only 8 bits of significant data within individual bytes.

Structure of the Inscript Keyboard

The Inscript overlay is same for all the Indian scripts, and contains the basic characters required for all of them. The Inscript
keyboard overlay shown below is for the Assamese and Bengali scripts. The characters which are not used in Bengali are not
shown in the overlay. Assamese is also written in the Bengali script.
When the Scroll Lock is Off (indicated by an LED), the normal English overlay is active. Scroll Lock has to be put On for selecting
Inscript overlay. Characters available in this overlay are shown in the right half of the key tops.

In the Inscript overlay the following English overlay characters are available in their usual places:

Inscript Keyboard overlay has been optimized both for touch-typing as well as sight-typing. Touch typing is done primarily through

are primarily meant for sight typing.

Depending on "Keep archives history" option in General settings dialog, a few names of recently opened archives can be present below "Exit" command. You may use them to quickly open these archives in WinRAR.

WinRar Wizard

Wizard interface
- WinRAR Wizard interface is designed for novice users and allows to perform basic compression and decompression operations using the simple step by step procedure.
- You need to press Wizard button on WinRAR toolbar to display the wizard dialog. By default this button is visible both inside and outside of archives, but you may disable or enable it like other toolbar buttons with "Select buttons…" in General settings dialog. Another option of the same, "General settings" dialog, "Activate Wizard on start", allows to run Wizard every time when WinRAR starts.
- Every Wizard dialog contains a brief instruction at the top, describing dialog contents and possible user actions. You may also press Help button to get more detailed instructions.
Wizard operation:
- Here you need to select an operation to perform.
- If you wish to unpack contents of RAR, ZIP or other archive, choose "Unpack an archive" option. For example, you need to select it to decompress a file downloaded from Internet.
- If you need to create a new archive and place some of your files in compressed format to it, choose "Create a new archive" option. It may be useful to compress files before sending them by email or copying to floppy disk, it help to reduce file size.
- If you wish to add files to already existing archive instead of creating a new one, select "Add files to already existing archive" option.
  After you have chosen an operation, press "Next" button at the bottom of dialog. If you selected "Create a new archive" or "Add files to already existing archive" option, you will be prompted with "Select files to add" dialog, where you need to select those files, which you wish to compress. In case of "Unpack an archive" you will go directly to the next "Choose the archive" dialog.

Archiving options -
Here you may specify some additional archiving options.
If high archiving speed is more important for you than compression ratio, enable "Faster, but less tight compression".
If you wish to delete files after they had been successfully archived, set "Delete files after archiving".
If you need to create a self-extracting archive, enable "Create self-extracting (.exe) archive" option. Such archive does not need WinRAR to be unpacked, it has exe extension and it is enough to run it (double click on its icon) to unpack its contents.
You can press "Set password…" button and specify a password if you wish to encrypt archiving files. Do not forget your password, it is impossible to unpack encrypted files without it.
Also, if you create a new archive, you may split it to several separate parts (called volumes). Sometimes it may be more convenient to have several files of smaller size than one large file. If you wish to do it, just enter a size of single part in bytes in the input field near the bottom of dialog.
If you update an already existing archive, options to create self-extracting archive and to split it to parts are disabled. They are accessible only in case of new archive.
Note that all settings in this dialog are optional, usually you may keep their default values.
When done, press "Finish" button at the bottom of dialog to start the archiving operation.

Self-extracting (SFX) archives

:: Self-extracting (SFX) archives ::

An SFX (SelF-eXtracting) archive is an archive, merged with an executable module, which is used to extract files from the archive when executed. Thus no external program is necessary to extract the contents of an SFX archive, it is enough to execute it. Nevertheless WinRAR can work with SFX archives as with any other archives, so if you do not want to run a received SFX archive (for example, because of possible viruses), you may use WinRAR to view or extract its contents.
SFX archives usually have .exe extension as any other executable file.SFX archives are convenient if you want to give an archive to somebody, but do not know, if they have an appropriate archiver to extract files from it. You may also use SFX archives to distribute your own software. For example, WinRAR package is based on GUI RAR SFX module Default.sfx.
To create an SFX archive from the command line you may use the -sfx switch to make a new archive or S command to convert an existing archive to SFX. In WinRAR shell either select "Create SFX archive" option in Archive name and parameters dialog, when creating a new archive or enter into an already existing archive and press "SFX" button.
WinRAR distributive includes several SFX modules. All SFX modules have .sfx extension and must be in the same folder as WinRAR. By default WinRAR always uses Default.sfx module, but you may specify the name of another module directly in "-sfx" switch or "S" command. For example, to convert myarchive.rar to SFX using WinCon.SFX module run:
WinRAR SWinCon.SFX myarchive.rar

In the WinRAR shell you can select the desired SFX module from the list displayed when executing Convert archive to SFX command.

Archiving with WinRar

Arhiving with Winrar::
- First, you need to run WinRAR. Double-click or press Enter on the WinRAR icon. You can also start it from the Windows "Start menu": enter "Programs" then "WinRAR" and then run the "WinRAR" item.
- When WinRAR is running, it displays a list of files and folders in the current folder. You need to go to the folder, which contains files to archive. You may use Ctrl+D, the disks list below the toolbar or click on the small disk icon in the bottom left corner, to change the current disk. Press BS, Ctrl+PgUp, small "Up" button below the toolbar or double-click on the folder named ".." to go to the parent folder. Press Enter, Ctrl+PgDn or double-click on any other folder to enter that folder. Ctrl+\ will set the root disk folder as the current folder.
- When you have entered the folder with the desired files, select the files and folders, which you are going to archive. This may be achieved by using Shift + arrow keys or the mouse as in Windows Explorer and other Windows programs. It is also possible, in WinRAR, to select files using Space or Ins keys. "Gray +" and "Gray -" keys on the numeric keypad allow the selection of groups of files using file masks.
- Having selected one or more files, click on the Add button at the top of the WinRAR window, press Alt+A or select the "Add files to archive" command in the Commands menu. Enter the destination archive name in the dialog box which appears or simply accept the default name. You may select, in this dialog, the format of the new archive (RAR or ZIP), compression level, volume size and other archiving parameters. This dialog described in details in Archive name and parameters dialog topic. Click on the OK button when you are ready to create the archive.
- During the archiving process, a window will be displayed showing operation statistics. If you wish to break the archiving process, click on the Cancel button in the command window. You may press the "Background" button in this window to minimize WinRAR to the tray. When archiving is completed, the command window disappears and the newly created archive becomes the currently selected file.
  It is also possible to add files, to an existing RAR archive, using drag-and-drop. Select the desired archive in the WinRAR window and press Enter (or double click) on its name. RAR will read the archive and display its contents. You may now add files to the archive by simply dragging them from another program and dropping to WinRAR.
Archiving files from the command line
- The common command line syntax for archiving files is:
  WINRAR A [ -switches ] [ Files ] [ @File lists ]
  For example, if you wish add the file LETTER.TXT to the archive LETTERS.RAR, type:
  WINRAR A LETTERS.RAR LETTER.TXT
- If an archive extension is not specified, WinRAR will use the default archive format selected in the default compression profile, but you may override it by specifying either .RAR or .ZIP extension.
- The next example: add all *.WAV files to the solid RAR archive Songs:
  WINRAR A -S Songs.RAR *.WAV
- Also it is possible to list the files to be archived in a file, rather than listing them on the command line. In this case the name of the file, containing the list of files to be archived, must be given on the command line. This is indicated by placing the symbol @ before this file name. Thus, if you create a file, Binaries, containing the strings *.exe and *.com, then execute the command:
  
  WINRAR A TOOLS.ZIP @Binaries
  all files with .EXE and .COM extensions from the current folder will be added to the ZIP archive TOOLS.
- During the archiving process, a window, containing statistics, will be displayed. If you wish to break the archiving process, click on the Cancel button in the command window. You may press the "Background" button in this window to minimize WinRAR to the tray. If archiving is completed, without problems, WinRAR will terminate. In case of an error, a Diagnostic message window will be displayed.
Archiving files in Explorer or Desktop::
- If you did not disable the "Integrate WinRAR into shell" option when installing WinRAR, it is possible to archive files directly in a Windows shell. Select the files you are going to compress, in Explorer or Desktop, press the right mouse button on the selected files and choose "Add to archive…". Note that if the option "Cascaded context menus" in Integration settings dialog is switched on, you need to open "WinRAR" submenu to access to described above commands. Otherwise they are resided in the top level menu.
Another method is to drag file icons to an existing archive icon and drop them. Files will be added to this archive.

Extracting with WinRar

  Archive extension is optional and may be omitted.
- The next command extracts all *.WAV files from the archive Songs to the folder Audio:
  WINRAR X Songs *.WAV Audio\
  It is also possible to list the files to be extracted in a file, rather than listing them on the command line. · drag-and-drop an archive to the WinRAR icon or window. Before doing this ensure that WinRAR does not already display another archive, otherwise the dropped archive will be added to the currently displayed archive;
· run WinRAR from the command line with a single parameter - the archive name.

   When an archive is opened in WinRAR, its contents are displayed. Select files and folders, which should be extracted. You may do this using Shift + arrow keys or Shift + left mouse button as in Windows Explorer and other Windows programs. Also in WinRAR it is possible to select files using Space or Ins keys. Introduction to WinRAR::

WinRAR is a 32-bit Windows version of the RAR archiver - a powerful tool which allows you to create, manage and control archive files. There are several versions of RAR, for a number of operating environments: Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, DOS, OS/2, MacOS X.

Versions :

There are two versions of RAR for Windows:
- · Version with graphical user interface - WinRAR.exe;
- · Command line console (text mode) version - Rar.exe.

WinRAR features :
- · Complete support of RAR and ZIP 2.0 archives;
- · Highly sophisticated, original compression algorithm;
- · Special algorithms optimized for text, audio, graphics, 32-bit and 64-bit Intel executables compression;
- · Shell interface including drag-and-drop facility and wizard;
- · Command line interface;
- · Non RAR archives (7Z, ACE, ARJ, BZ2, CAB, GZ, ISO, JAR, LZH, TAR, UUE, Z) management;
- · Solid archiving, which can raise compression ratio by 10% - 50% over more common methods, particularly when packing a large number of small, similar files;
- · Multivolume archives;
- · Creation of self-extracting archives (also multivolume) using the default or optional SFX modules;
- · Recovering physically damaged archives;
- · Recovery volumes allowing to reconstruct missing parts of multivolume archives.
- · Unicode support in file names;
- · Other service functions, such as encryption, archive comments, error logging, etc.

Limitation of WinRar :
- The number of files, which can be added to an archive, depends upon the amount of available memory and the length of file names. Roughly 128 bytes of memory are required per archived file for RAR archive. For example, it can take about 128 MB to compress one million of files. WinRAR has been tested to handle over one million of files.
- The size of a RAR archive, as well as the size of any single file within a RAR archive, is limited to 8,589,934,591 GB (9,223,372,036,854,775,807 bytes). Note that to create archives larger than 4 GB, you need to use NTFS, as older file systems do not support such large files.
- The size of a ZIP archive, as well as the size of any single file within a ZIP archive, is limited to 2 GB.
  In general RAR archive format is much better optimized for heavy tasks involving huge number of files and gigabytes of disk space.
